The work could have been extended ad infinitum by adding to it the ceremonies and incantations which actually form a part of the Scripture of Witchcraft, but as these are nearly all–or at least in great number–to be found in my works entitled Etruscan-Roman Remains and Legends of FlorenceI have hesitated to compile such a volume before ascertaining whether there is a sufficiently large number of the public who would buy such a work.

Along with increased scholarly attention, Aradia came to play a special role in the history of Gardnerian Wicca and its offshoots, being used as evidence that pagan witchcraft survivals aitches in Europe, and because a passage from the book’s first chapter was used as a part of the religion’s liturgy.

No, don’t think so. On New Years day, she handed over to him a document in witchess own handwriting, the Vangelwhich is the core of this book.
As folk stories and mythology, this story remains enjoyable, but as a historical document, it doesn’t work terribly well. Aradia, or the Gospel of the Witches begins with the tale of Aradia’s birth to Diana and Luciferwho is described as “the god of the Sun and of the Moon, the god of Light Splendourwho was so proud of his beauty, and who for his pride was driven from Paradise”. Leland’s final draft was a slim volume. That was only one of the problems with this, and one that could easily have been noticed by contemporary critics.
Like Sir Charles Coldstream, they have peeped into the crater of Vesuvius after it had ceased to “erupt,” and found “nothing in it. A History of Witchcraft: His book, in fine, belongs to the very great number of those written on ghosts and superstition since the latter has fallen into discredit, in which the authors indulge in much satirical and very arsdia but cheap ridicule of what to them is merely vulgar and false.

I was excited to read this, but ultimately disappointed. This lack of cohesion, or “inconsistency”, is an argument for the text’s authenticity, according to religious scholar Chas S. If I give one of these books anything above 2 stars, it’s a decent example of this type of book.
The book has very little to do with Aradia, female savior of the Italian Witches, and seems to be a Christianized version of the history of the Streghe.
